As with most fads, I jump in about two years after they have peaked and faded. So that is why I find it fitting for me to start a 12 month project for 2013. It’s been done, probably to death. But this is something important to me. It’s not a happiness project, or a fitness plan. It’s a plan to build a tighter circle. To strengthen existing friendships and to build more in meaningful ways.
This project has stemmed from the fact that, after being married for 15 years and starting our little family, what or who I consider a friend has dramatically evolved. No longer are my friendships defined by who will meet me for happy hour or who takes the coolest vacations. I’ve learned that all of the people in our lives serve a purpose and we can’t all be best friends, but it is still important to build a solid circle of people you can count on. Those who will be there for you no matter what. Who accept your faults and love you unconditionally. Is this impossible to find after 35? I’m cautiously optimistic. And I’m going to take a year-long look at where and how to grow these friendships.
For the month of January, I’m going to take a survey of what’s gone right and wrong for me over the past few years with my friendships. It might hurt a little bit, but a little inward investigation is healthy, right? Each month after that, I’ll focus on another goal or theme related to friendships: rekindling lost friendships, social media friends, mommy friends, work friends and more. I plan to find new ways to break through my inhibitions when it comes to opening up to other people and understand how judgement can sabotage relationships.
