Fun with social media

Jun 11, 2011 · by Sean

Social media is amazing. We’ve definitely come a long way from the hammer and chisel chat rooms of the early ‘90s. You can use it to hawk your wares, stalk old flames and make new friends. I’ve also found it quite handy for pranking family from across the country. Take, for instance, a hilarious episode from this past weekend.

While we were down in New Orleans for the @KreweofRocckus Mardi Gras weekend last March, hubby and I met Tommy and Nancy from Indiana. We hung out the entire weekend and had the best time with them. After the party ended, we continued to keep in touch through social media and texting. So when Tommy posted a picture of himself riding a horse on Facebook, it set off a slew of “Brokeback Mountain” innuendos (not that there’s anything wrong with that) on his wall. A few minutes later, Nancy called me laughing hysterically. We talked a bit about how we need to get together and how the guys miss hanging out. I asked her where they were and she said they were in downtown Indianapolis. Turns out, we knew that hubby’s little brother was in the same area at another bar. I figured, if Tommy can’t hang out with hubby, then he can hang out with someone who looks just like him!

Through the magic of social media we were able to send Nancy and Tommy to the same bar where Little Bro was. We sent a pic to them so they could pick him out in the crowd. They took a tequila shot over to his table and told him it was from his brother. He was completely shocked. The good thing is that they ended up having a blast and hanging out all night. Now they are all friends, too!

See, social media is good for much more than peddling your wares.

Have you pranked someone through social media? I’d love to hear your stories.

It’s all true. So much funnier in the moment.

It is pretty amazing, isn’t it? I always get apocalyptic about it, but I love it.

I love it, too. Much more than I ever thought I would. It has allowed me to ‘meet’ so many lovely people – like you!

Great story. I have been a huge fan of social media in one form or another since the 90s as well. I have met so many great people that way! 🙂

I wasn’t a huge fan at first, but I finally found my flow.

Great story! I love to hear the good stuff about Social Media as opposed to all the bad stuff.

How cool you could use social media for something good other than just pushing your wares.

😉 I do have wares to push and I suck at using social media to do just that.
