This post is from a sponsored event I attended on behalf of Be Everywhere for the Macy’s Culinary Council. I was compensated for my time – and loved every minute of it!
Last weekend I got to attend my first official blogger event – and it was pretty cool. Actually, it was freaking hot. Like fry an egg on your dashboard hot. But it is Houston, and it is June, so it’s clearly dashboard egg frying season. Anyhoo… I had the privilege of attending the Macy’s Culinary Council American Icons event with Chef Johnny Iuzzini in Memorial City.
After a short check in with the sweet reps from Macy’s and meeting fellow Houston bloggers, we got down to business. Chef Iuzzini grabbed the mic and talked a little bit about the amazing ice cream he had created that we were all going to get to taste. Yes, he’s kind of cute. Yes, he looks a little Baldwinesque. But I’ve been known to dig a Baldwin every now and then.
Despite the crazy Texas heat, Chef Iuzzini drew a pretty good crowd. He told us about an incredible sour cream sorbet sundae, that he assured us wasn’t sour, and a bitter orange ice cream sundae with Heath Bar crumbles and chocolate sauce. He had me at Heath Bar.
So I stalked Johnny (not really) and got some action shots of him getting into the food truck to start serving up the goods. And then I snuck in the side door and took some behind the scenes shots. That was the cleanest truck I’ve ever seen in my life.
Chef Iuzzini actually assembled all of the sundaes and chatted some with the crowd. He was very personable and incredibly friendly. When my turn came, I asked him which was his favorite.
“Try both,” he smiled.
“Um, no… you pick one for me,” I protested.
“The bitter orange is my favorite. The Heath Bar crumbles make it.”
I was sold. He could have served me mud pies and I would have smiled and awkwardly stammered just the same. And strangely, the sundaes were served up with a side of sausage. But those were freaking awesome, too.
Honestly, it was the best ice cream sundae and sausage with peppers I have ever eaten. Really, it was very good. I had a wedding to get ready for so I couldn’t stick around to get a photo with him, get a quote, or get to grab a copy of his cook book. But I had a great time! Can’t wait to see what else Macy’s brings to town.
