Wino Wednesday: Mollydooker

Jul 7, 2011 · by Sean

Australians – what a crazy lot. They have all kinds of slang for all kinds of things and none of it is remotely close to what we say in the US.

My husband’s BFF used to be married to a chick from Australia and she used all kinds of slang that we just didn’t get. The worst part was that some of the things we said meant different things to her. Like, if I said I was pissed, she assumed I was drunk. I probably was, but that’s not what I meant. While that is the same word used in different ways, some of the slang terms Aussies use aren’t even remotely close to our terms, though. Take, for instance, Mollydooker. What do you think it means? Can you guess without googling it? I’ll save the definition for the end of this post, but in the meantime, I’ll clue you in to a rockin’ winery from our friends on the other side of the globe that shares that moniker.

About $25 a bottle - you can order online!

Mollydooker winery is located in McLaren Vale about 45 minutes outside Adelaide. The owners, Sarah and Sparky started this winery with only $1000 (Aus) in 2006 and have come a long way. A short five years later, a few of their wines have received five 99 point scores from The Wine Advocate. They have also been in the Wine Spectator’s Top Ten Wines of the World two years in succession and Mollydooker Lefty wines have twice been featured by the Wine Advocate among The Best Value Wines in the World. Not too bad, right?

Well, my favorite Mollydooker wine is  the 2010 Maitre D Cabernet. Oh my is it delicious!! It smells like a good, deep red wine should: like dark red cherries mashed up in an oaky barrel and mixed with some yummy lavender thrown in for good measure. And the taste, I can barely stand how good it is. You can taste the cherry, other ripe berries like raspberry with hints of licorice and coffee. I love the toasted oak and chocolate aftertaste.

I’m not too sure where you can buy it. I found it at a wine tasting somewhere in Houston a couple of years ago and just had some at a restaurant in Cocoa Beach, Fl tonight. At $11 a glass, it was sooooo worth it. And I scored kudos from coworkers on the fabulous pick. The good thing is that you can buy it from their website. I would rush to get some of this amazing Cabernet if I were you. Trust me, you will thank me for it after your first sip.

What’s even more amazing? They have a yummy Merlot. For someone who won’t drink any effing Merlot, I sure do like it a lot. The Cab is way better, though.

And, in case you didn’t cheat by Google, Mollydooker is slang for left-handed person. Sarah and Sparky are both lefties. 🙂

Cheers!!

I put this on the must buy list for the next trip to the booze shop.
PS Try being married to a Brit. The hubs and I had a major learning curve in the beginning. There are still times when we are far from being on the same page when it comes to what should be a simple conversation.
