Wino Wednesday: It’s not always about the wine

Jul 28, 2011 · by Sean

20110727-104058.jpg This week’s Wino Wednesday, like last week’s, isn’t just about the wine. I had some good wine tonight: Rodney Strong Cabernet. It was good. I’d drink it again, but I wouldn’t go out of my way. If you are in the mood for a dry, mellow red at about $12 retail, you should try it at least once. But, I won’t be heartbroken if you pass.

What made the meal wasn’t the wine nor the food, it was the company. I’m up in Denver for reasons I won’t discuss. One of the best things about coming to Colorado is that I get to see my friend Valerie (@themommysalami).

Valerie and I met at our first (and only) duty station in the Air Force back in January of 1995. I wouldn’t say we became fast friends, but we did become good friends. She and her husband helped me through a particularly hard time in my young life and I’m eternally grateful.

At some point along the way, we fell out of touch. Thanks to the miracle that is the interwebs, we found each other again and I feel we are better friends now than we ever were before. It’s amazing how much we have in common. Our daughters are just five months apart. We both got out of the AF after four years (and regret it). We both love space. We have both had rocky and eerily similar childhoods. The list goes on.

But what I like best about us is that even though we live in different states, we pick up where we left off each time we see each other. And we genuinely enjoy each other’s company.

Tonight we both drove an hour-ish to meet for dinner – through rush hour and torrential rain and some weird Ikea-related roadblock. We ordered the same meal. We split a desert. And we spent three hours at dinner. The time flew by.

The older I get the more I cherish times and people like these. If you have fallen out of touch with a friend, make an effort to get in contact. You never know – you could have a BFF you never realized before.

I’m kind of amazed you could write a whole post on your iPhone. Ehem, love this story of reconnection. There are several women I hope to come back together with after enough time has passed. Sometimes you need that space to appreciate what makes you each unique.

I’ve had to write posts on my phone twice now. The WP app is actually pretty good. I can’t align the pics the way I like, but no biggie.

I was just thinking about a few girlfriends I haven’t talked to in ages. It’s crazy how quickly time goes by before you realize it. And I happened to spot one on Facebook the other day(we have mutual friends it seems.) Might have to get in touch after all. 🙂 Also wanted to say hope you have a nice time in Colorado.

Hi Lydia! Colorado was really nice. I say go for it and contact her. You never know what will happen.
