I’m klassy – with a K

Jun 18, 2011 · by Sean

I hate throwing things away. I’m not a hoarder necessarily, I just respect the value of a dollar. Take my shoes for instance. I bought these little faux suede flats in the basement of some store on Broadway in NYC. In 2008. For $7. It was a steal and I totally love them.

So klassy – with a K.

The problem is that, while sitting here at my desk, I happened to notice that the heelcap is gone. I’ve been all over this giant office building today so no telling where it is. And I’m not about to retrace my steps to find it, either. Especially at 4 p.m. on a Friday.

Based on these unfortunate events, I would venture a guess that it’s time to toss them out. They are a bit ragged anyway.

The reasons for my clinginess with material things is a post for another day. Let’s just say we moved a lot when I was young (25+ times$ and my dad was fond of leaving everything behind.

Do you cling to material things? What is one thing you’ve kept the longest and why?

You could go get the heels fitted with taps. HA HA! EVERYONE would know you were coming on those cement floors at NASA. I don’t cling to things. Infact I should probably hold onto more things for sentimental reasons but I can’t help it. I have to throw things out if I don’t use them often. I grew up with a step grandmother who was a hoarder. I didn’t know what it was at the time, I just knew she had a whole lot of “stuff”. Now, too much “stuff” sitting around drives me crazy. I have a few small older things that belonged to my grandma or my mom packed in a box. But that’s it. One box for the both of them.

That is hilarious! But, there’s a reason they were only $7. They never should have lasted beyond my trek through Manhattan the day I bought them. Ugh! My grandmother was a bit of a hoarder, too, but not as bad as some. Clutter drives me nuts!

I totally thought you were about to explain some sort of MacGyver solution with office supplies to fix your shoe 🙂 Probably best to toss them, though!

Nah, they basically fell apart after that. I’m lucky I didn’t have to pick Ava up at daycare barefoot.

Just add some duct tape to the heels. Problem solved and you get to keep the shoes.

Can you believe I found the heel under my desk yesterday? Hahaha! I was so paranoid…

I keep things like the shoes around for practical reasons – I hate to shop. I, for example, noted one day recently that my favorite black dress shoes for work have been with me since before my youngest was born – um, he’s 7. Yeah.

My husband clings to everything! Lately certain ragged items have been “disappearing” during laundry days. But there comes a time when letting go is good!
