I can never get out of Target for less than $100. Typically my basket is filled with essentials like picture frames, toothpaste and the occasional Barbie doll. Rarely do I ever buy booze there. Well that has changed now.
My husband was off on a work trip this week and I took Ava to Target to get presents for a double-birthday party the next afternoon. I also needed milk. So I started out in the food section and picked up a few other things like fruit snacks and flavored bubbly water. After getting the milk, I made a bee-line through the wine aisle to get over to the toy section faster. Lo and behold! They have all kinds of stuff there.
There were the typical low-end wines you can get at the grocery store as well as some more expensive things. But there is also a ‘special’ section where several wines are offered at a deep discount. I thought it was just crap nobody wants. Was I ever wrong.
Years ago my husband and I went to a wedding in Napa Valley. One of my favorite vineyards that we visited on that trip was the Niebaum-Coppola estate. It was beautiful and there were all kinds of movie paraphernalia and a few Oscars on display. We did a small tasting and I fell in love with their wines. Coppola Diamond or Director’s Cut are my go-to wines when I’m at a loss of what to buy.
So, at Target that day, a Coppola Diamond pinot grigio caught my eye. I’m not a fan of pinot grigio, really, but it was hot out and I was entertaining the idea of getting something light. When I saw the price tag, I freaked a little. It was only $5.95. For real. This wine retails for $13-14 typically.
Now, since I was shopping for toys and Ava was being a bit grumpy, I only grabbed one bottle and sped off to the toy department. When I got home, I chilled it while cooking dinner. I couldn’t wait to see if it was really worth $5.95 or just a diamond in the rough.
It was delicious! Very light and fruity with hardly any tannin. It barely leaves any aftertaste at all. I immediately thought it was a great steal and that I should go back and buy more.
The next day, we were headed to the double-birthday party and Target happens to be along the way (sort of). I popped in with Ava and went straight to the wine section. There were still 11 bottles there. Does no one know the deliciousness of this wine?
I bought 10 bottles. I couldn’t be too greedy, you know.

I never knew Target sold wine. I will have to check that out next time I go there. Especially if they have good discounts.

I don’t think they all do and our just started selling it a few years back. Us Houstonians love our boozes.
I am really freakin’ jealous that you can buy wine at Target. (Though that would be very, very dangerous for me.) In PA, the state gov. controls all the liquor stores. It’s purely crazy, an old law left over from prohibition, and for some reason, it hasn’t changed yet, even though the electorate desperately wants a change.
And that is why I can’t buy wine at Target.

We still have Blue Laws. Like on Sunday, I went to buy Father’s Day breakfast and threw in some Abbey Leffe for good measure. I got a stern look from the checkout girl who said, “Ma’am, you can’t buy this until noon.” I’ve lived here 13 years. What was I thinking?
Definitely add me to the “I’m jealous because our Super Target doesn’t have wine” list.
I will have to try that wine. I love Pinot Grisios. So nice of you to leave one. HA!

I didn’t want to be greedy, you know. Our Super Target only got wine a couple of years ago. It was a big deal, but I’m partial to my liquor store.
