The other day I got to meet and hang out with Nickelback. I can honestly say that I’m not a fan and I still don’t care for their music, but what a bunch of nice guys! As a self-professed grunge girl, I’m sure Kurt Cobain would not approve of this picture to the left. But, I was there, they were there and I just didn’t see the need to fight it. And they were incredibly sweet. For rock stars. I mean, why wouldn’t they be cool? They are rock stars!
Who hasn’t dreamed of being a rock star? Blind adoration. Free stuff. Exotic locations. Working for 6 months out of the year and making millions. Yeah, I’d love to be a rock star. But the reality is that maybe 1% of the population actually gets to live this life. All the while, the rest of us ‘normal’ people are left to trudge along, living paycheck to paycheck and longing for the weekends.
But what if there was a way to live this rock star life without needing talent or a good agent? I mean, isn’t being a parent a little like being a rock star?
Ava gives me blind adoration. She follows me everywhere, wants to dress like I do and wear makeup like I do. She gives me snuggles while we watch cartoons. She loves her mommy unconditionally and, in her eyes, I’m a huge rock star.
She brings me free stuff all the time: paper lanterns colored haphazardly with crayons, flowers from the yard, homework from pre-school that she worked so hard to finish.
We travel to exotic locations like the neighborhood pool and the children’s museum…
But I still haven’t figured out the whole ‘work less, make more’ thing. Maybe Ava will be my inspiration to find that one thing that makes working not feel like work. I’d love to spend quality time with her and visit more exotic locations (like Target or McDonald’s) much more often than I can now. But until I find that work-life balance it’s just going to have to wait a while.
I know it can be done because I see it happen every day. I envy these rock star entrepreneur moms (and dads) that are rampant in the blog world. Book deals, TV pilots, movie screenplays and products on the shelves at major big box stores. I only wish I could find that one thing that gives me my big break. Being a rock star to Ava is one thing, rocking my life is entirely another.
